After spending two years out of the sport, Capel returned with a vengeance in 2003, winning the world outdoor championships 200 meters, running lead-off for the gold medal 4X100m relay and being world #1 ranked in both the 100 and 200m by Track & Field News. Capel burst onto the world scene in spectacular fashion in 1999 when he ran 19.87 for 200m while at the University of Florida. Capel’s 2000 best in the 200m of 19.85 at the U.S. Olympic Trials was #2 in the U.S. to Michael Johnson’s 19.71…Faltered out of the blocks during Olympic final costing him valuable time. On his decision to quit football for track during the Olympic year, Capel said ‘I really wanted to concentrate on making the Olympic team, and I didn’t think I could do that with the other pressures I had’. An August 29, 2000 story in USA Today told how citizens in Capel’s hometown of Brooksville, Fla., raised $29,000 enabling Capel’s parents (Rev. John Sr. and Virginia) to travel to Sydney for the Games. He and his wife Sandy have two children, Janya and Serenity.

final in Sydney (20.49) after faltering out of the blocks; Placed 2nd in the
NCAA Indoor 200, running 20.26, which broke the old American indoor record...withdrew
from the University of Florida in April... second at adidas Oregon Track Classic
100 (10.21)... ranked #6 in the world (#1 U.S.) in 200m...bests of 10.12 in
a heat at the Olympic Trials and 19.85 (#2 in U.S.).
