Kansas University’s basketball team completed its seventh day of pre-Canada-trip training camp Wednesday at Horejsi Center. “To be honest with you, in our seven days we’ve had five good days and two where we looked really young,” KU coach Bill Self said of his 2008-09 team that currently includes eight returnees and five newcomers. C.J. Henry, who orally committed to play basketball at Kansas University in the spring of 2005, only to sign a professional baseball contract as a first-round draft pick of the New York Yankees, has again decided to play hoops. But this time it’s at the University of Memphis, not KU. Read more.

Kansas University coach Bill Self has promoted from within to fill the position of KU director of basketball operations. Brett Ballard, who has worked in KU’s hoops office the past five years as KU’s administrative assistant/video coordinator, on Tuesday was named replacement for Ronnie Chalmers, who resigned his director of basketball post on Aug. 12. Bill Self's golf-playing days are coming to an end. This weekend, he'll be in Canada for the Jayhawk's exhibition trip to Ottawa. But on Monday, however, he took part in the Boy Scouts of America Benefit Tournament at Lawrence Country Club. Brady Morningstar, who turns 23 on Jan. 23, is older than your average college sophomore. “They always joke to me I’m going to graduate when I’m 27,” Morningstar, Kansas University’s third-year soph basketball shooting guard, said with a laugh, referring to his Jayhawk teammates. “I’ve always felt like an older guy on the team,” he added, asked about his status as a team veteran. Rush plans to make many returns to Lawrence

Former Kansas University basketball standout Brandon Rush, who last week bought a condo in Indianapolis, plans on returning to his college hometown often during a long NBA career. “I love Lawrence. I don’t know what it is about it. I fell in love with it as soon as I got here,” said Rush, a Jayhawk for three seasons before being tapped No. 13 overall by the Portland Trail Blazers in the 2008 NBA Draft. The 6-foot-6 Kansas City, Mo., native, who was traded to the Indiana Pacers on draft day, was in town Friday and Saturday to sign some national championship books and visit with his former KU teammates. Travis Releford was deemed academically eligible by the NCAA Clearinghouse on Thursday and participated in Kansas University’s 2-hour, 20-minute season-opening, pre-Canada-trip basketball practice at Horejsi Center. Fellow freshmen Marcus and Markieff Morris missed the session, however, as they continue waiting for what is expected to be a favorable ruling from the organization. Read more.

Kansas University freshman basketball player Travis Releford has been deemed academically eligible by the NCAA Clearinghouse, KU coach Bill Self said Thursday. Freshmen Marcus and Markieff Morris, however, were not cleared Thursday, thus they did not participate in an afternoon practice, KU's first workout in preparation for a three-game, Labor Day weekend trip to Canada.

Kansas University basketball coach Bill Self hopes three incoming freshmen will be available to practice today, the first day of the 2008-09 school year. Twins Marcus and Markieff Morris, as well as Travis Releford, need to get the OK from the NCAA Clearinghouse before being eligible to take part in workouts prior to the Jayhawks’ trip to Canada.
