KU track wraps up action at Big 12 Indoor Championship

The Kansas men’s and women’s track and field teams wrapped up their weekend at the 2020 Big 12 Indoor Championship at the Lied Recreation Center in Ames, Iowa, on Saturday, with the KU women finishing sixth as a team and the men placing ninth.

The KU women scored a total of 54 points, while the men scored 45 points. Iowa State claimed the men’s team competition by scoring 137 points, and Texas won the women’s competition for the second straight year with 180.77 points.

Junior Alexandra Emilianov secured second place in women’s shot put with a throw 16.68 meters (54-8.75 feet) to lead the way for the Jayhawks. Senior Jedah Caldwell finished in third in the women’s 200-meter final with a time of 23.97.

In the women’s 1,000 meters, freshman Addison Coppinger placed fourth with a time of 2:50.75. In the final event of the day, KU’s 4×400 meter relay team of Mariah Kuykendoll, Zantori Dickerson, Caldwell and Honour Finley ran to a runner-up finish in the event with a time of 3:34.41.

On the men’s side, sophomore Treyvon Ferguson made his first-career Big 12 Indoor podium appearance in the men’s triple jump, where he placed third overall. After a full day of heptathlon competition on Friday, Kansas freshman Mark Burdin made his way into scoring contention in the final three events on Saturday.

In the men’s heptathlon pole vault, Burdin jumped a personal best 4.57 meters (15-0 feet) to earn 781 points, topping his previous best of 4.25 meters (13-11.25 feet) set earlier this season at the Jayhawk Classic. Burdin finished the heptathlon with 5,194 points.

Kansas will compete at the 2020 NCAA Indoor Championships in Albuquerque, N.M., on March 13-14, with qualifiers being announced at a later date.
