David Mitchell's preseason take: Jones was primarily a run blocker who wasn't much of a receiver last year at tight end. He'll stick to blocking this year at left tackle. The senior co-captain has drawn rave reviews from the coaching staff at his new position. He's a bit undersized to play left tackle in the Big 12 and will have to make up for that with his quickness and technique.

Career Overview/Notes

Moved to left tackle in the offseason and was named one of five co-captains by his teammates. After his redshirt season, Jones was in an accident after his car blew a tire on the Kansas Turnpike new Emporia. He suffered a serious head injury, but made a full recovery.

as a junior (2002)

Mainly used as a blocker last season, Jones played in all 12 games and started five times. He caught 14 passes for 140 yards and a touchdown, including a career-high three receptions at Tulsa. He also had a season-best 28 yards and a touchdown against the Golden Hurricane. Jones had six multiple-catch games, and reeled in a sesaon-long 18-yard reception against Nevada-Las Vegas.

as a sophomore (2001)

Listed No. 1 on the depth chart early in the season, Jones rotated in and out of the tight end position. He played in 10 games, catching seven passes for 68 yards and a touchdown. That score came against Nebraska, the Jayhawks only touchdown against the Cornhuskers.

as a redshirt freshman (2000)

Was the No. 3 tight end behind Jason Gulley and David Hurst, playing in four games and earning his first varsity letter.

as a freshman (1999)

Redshirted.

High School

Jones earned first-team all-district honors his senior season, and was named to the Texas top-100 player list. He was the No. 85 tight end prep prospect by Recruiting Now, and lettered two years in both football and basketball. Jones was named to his school's honor roll and was a Presidential Scholar.
