David Mitchell's preseason take: Dyer was KU's seventh-leading tackler despite splitting time between quarterback and defensive back. He also led KU in tackles twice, but the senior co-captain was relegated to a backup role in the spring and was getting few reps in preseason practice. The Olathe South product should still play a valuable role as a member of special teams units.

Career Overview/Notes

Dyer moved to safety in the middle of last season after bouncing from first-string to backup quarterback his first three years at KU. The Garth Brooks fan earned a bachelor's degree in business administration in May of 2003 and is taking graduate classes this fall before ultimately attending law school. He is a five-time Jayhawk Scholar.

as a junior (2002)

Moved to safety before KU's game against Baylor on Oct. 5, and moved back to quarterback for the final game of the season after Bill Whittemore and Jonas Weatherbie suffered season-ending injuries. Named to the Big 12 all-academic first team, Dyer finished the season with 48 tackles and one pass breakup. He recorded double-figure tackles in three of his five games, including a career-best 14 tackles against Texas A&M — his first career start on defense.

As a quarterback, Dyer completed 23-of-47 passes for 259 yards, a touchdown and three interceptions. He also carried the ball nine times for eight yards.

as a sophomore (2001)

Dyer started three of the first four games of the 2001 season, and saw action in a total of eight games. He was 43-of-89 passing for 460 yards and three touchdowns, starting against Southwest Missouri State, UCLA, Texas Tech and Texas.

Listed No. 2 behind Dylen Smith, Dyer saw limited action in six games as quarterback. He completed 5-of-12 passes for 60 yards, including a 30-yard pass to J.T. Thompson against Nebraska. Dyer rushed for 24 yards on seven carries, including a career-long 10-yard rush against Southern Illinois. He also had his only rushing touchdown of the season against the Salukies.

He passed for 1,246 yards, completing 102 of 162 passing attempts, and six touchdowns his senior season, and finished his high-school career with 4,660 yards passing, 39 TDs and 5,081 yards in total offense. Named first-team all-Sunflower League, all-state by the Kansas Football Coaches Assn. and second-team all-state by the Topeka Capital-Journal and Wichita Eagle. Dyer was rated the No. 7 quarterback in the Big 12 region by Prep Star, the 63rd best prep prospect in the Midlands Region by SuperPrep Magazine and the No. 1 quarterback in the region by MoKan Recruiting.

Dyer lettered three years in football, two years in basketball and a year in track. He also was a member of National Honor Society and was selected as a U.S. Achievement Academy All-American Scholar.
