Football

KU v. ISU facts:

The first game between Kansas and Iowa State (Ames College) was held in 1898, making this series Kansas' third oldest current rivalry, behind only Missouri (1891) and Nebraska (1892).

This year's game will be the 82nd in the series, which ranks fifth behind Missouri (110 games played), Nebraska (108), Kansas State (99) and Oklahoma (97) in longest series.

Kansas holds the edge in the all-time series, winning 43 times to the Cyclones' 32. Six games have ended in ties. KU holds a winning record both in Lawrence (23-15-3) and in Ames (20-17-3). The teams have never met at a neutral site.

After that first game in 1898, the Jayhawks and Cyclones did not play again until 1916. They have played every single year since 1932.

Kansas has held ISU scoreless a total of 15 times, the most recent ocurring in 1991. The Cyclones have blanked the Jayhawks only seven times, and not since 1944.

The longest winning streak between the two teams is held by Kansas, who won seven in a row from 1991-97. ISU's longest win streak against the Jayhawks stands at five, covering the 1985-89 seasons. ISU has won the previous two meetings.

Biggest Jayhawk win: In 1952 Kansas shut out ISU 43-0, and is the biggest margin of victory for either school.

Biggest Cyclone win: last year's 49-7 drubbing was KU's worst defeat in the series, and stands as the most points ISU has scored against Kansas in a single game.

The most points scored by Kansas were their 53 points to ISU's 33 in 1951. The highest combined score occured in 1992 when KU beat the Cyclones 50-47.

That same 1992 game is also the biggest comeback in Kansas football history. Down by 26 ponts (47-21) as late as the third quarter, KU scored 29 unanswered points to take a three-point win.

In total points for the series, Kansas holds the edge, 1,566 to 1,341.

ON CONFERENCE OPENERS:

Kansas has faced Iowa State to open conference play 23 times, the most of any other conference foe (Kansas State is second, with 20 conference-opening matches).

Kansas has not fared well in conference openers, winning 38, losing 52 (including 21 shutouts) and tying four. This combines for a 21-25-1 record at home, and 17-27-3 on the road.

Since 1975, Kansas has won only five conference openers: Iowa State in 1984, Kansas State in 1992, Colrado in 1995, Oklahoma in 1996 and Missouri in 1997. That makes a 5-21-1 record for that span.

However, in Season openers, Kansas is a combined 57-48-7, winning seven of the last 11. Kansas has held its season-opening opponent scoreless 33 times.
