PRESEASON GAMES

Normally, 6-foot-9, 255-pound Wayne Simien has a hearty appetite. Just not on game day. "I was nervous all day. At pregame I couldn't eat anything. I was able to get down just a couple of pieces of steak," Simien said after feasting on EA Sports All-Stars for 26 points in Kansas University's 111-94 exhibition basketball victory on Monday night at Allen Fieldhouse. The Jayhawks' starting forward hit his first nine shots before missing his 10th and final attempt, a running jumper. He also was perfect in eight tries from the free-throw line and grabbed six rebounds in 22 minutes. It was reminiscent of Simien's play against the same team a year ago. Coming off the bench in his first game in a KU jersey, Simien burned the All-Stars for 25 points last November.

Jayhawks could use bomber off bench

Kirk Hinrich was getting his ankles taped in the trainer's room Tuesday night when broadcaster Max Falkenstien delivered the news. Hinrich - Kansas University's highly-regarded senior guard - had been named first-team preseason All-America by the Associated Press. His reaction? "Nothing," Hinrich said after scoring 12 points and dishing six assists in the Jayhawks' 101-66 men's basketball exhibition victory against Washburn at Allen Fieldhouse. "It's just based on last year's performance. It's an honor people think I'm one of the best players in the country but they shouldn't even have a preseason list." Especially when teammate Nick Collison isn't included.
