PRESEASON NIT

Revenge, or so they say, is sweet. "Revenge on Holy Cross, and I feel I gained some personal revenge tonight," Kansas University sophomore guard Keith Langford said after scoring 15 points off 7-of-8 shooting in the Jayhawks' 81-57 Preseason NIT victory over Holy Cross on Tuesday night at Allen Fieldhouse. Everybody knows the Jayhawks wanted to play a lot better -- perhaps even gain some revenge -- against the Crusaders, who led at halftime en route to an 11-point loss to KU in last year's NCAA Tournament. The talk of personal revenge is what had media types scratching their heads after the victory, which propels KU into Friday's second-round match against North Carolina-Greensboro at 6 p.m. at Allen Fieldhouse.

Keith Langford's brand-new 2002 Final Four ring fits perfectly. "It feels good. It looks good, too," Langford, Kansas University's 6-foot-4, sweet-shooting sophomore guard, said, showing the blue stone to reporters on Friday night at Allen Fieldhouse. "I think I just might put this on the shelf and just look at it every day for motivation." Langford was given a Final Four ring after Friday's 105-66 pasting of UNC Greensboro as a reward for last year's performance, not Friday's incredible Preseason NIT quarterfinal outing in which he scored a career-high 24 points off 10-of-11 shooting.

Teacher Roy Williams didn't rap pupil Matt Doherty on the knuckles with a ruler on Wednesday night. In fact, it was the student who administered some discipline to his mentor. Doherty's unranked North Carolina Tar Heels clubbed No. 2-ranked Kansas University, 67-56, on Wednesday night at Madison Square Garden. "That was the most embarrassed I've ever been as a coach," 15th-year KU coach Williams said after the Jayhawks were blown out in the Preseason NIT semifinal. Doherty, the third-year Carolina coach, tutored under Williams seven years in Lawrence. "Their coach was by far the best coach on the floor. Their kids played better than our kids. It was a sorry job on my part," Williams said.

Will KU respond to setback?

It's been an ordeal for Kansas University's Kirk Hinrich just to get dressed the past couple of days. "I can't even put on my shoes. I have to lie down on my bed," said Hinrich, KU's senior guard. He was in a world of hurt both physically and mentally Friday night after the Jayhawks' 83-73 loss to Florida in the Preseason NIT consolation finals at Madison Square Garden. The loss was KU's second in three days in the Big Apple, making Hinrich and his teammates feel rotten to the core. "I feel really sore," said Hinrich, who hit just one of seven threes and scored five points in 31 minutes against the Gators.
