No. 1 seeds are supposed to breeze to the Final Four, right? That's the theory, though the Midwest Region's top-seeded team, Kansas University, sees plenty of potential hazards and road blocks on a potentially bumpy route to Atlanta. As top seed in the NCAA Midwest Regional, the 29-3 Jayhawks, who will meet 18-12 Holy Cross on Thursday in St. Louis, face a potential second-round matchup Saturday against either No. 8 seed Stanford (19-8) or No. 9 seed Western Kentucky (28-3), teams ranked 16th and 18th respectively in last week's AP poll. Game stories:
Top Story
St. Louis — Kirk Hinrich sat on a training table in an Edward Jones Dome locker room, his swollen left ankle encased in ice with an electrical stem contraption connected to his skin. "It happened. It sucks. But I'm trying to keep in good spirits because we gutted it out and won the game," Hinrich said while receiving treatment for a severe ankle sprain after the No. 1-seeded Jayhawks barely escaped No. 16-seeded Holy Cross, 70-59, in a Midwest Regional opener on Thursday night. KU vs. Stanford (March 16, 2002)
Game stories:
Top Story
St. Louis — Like the most famous action hero of all, Kirk Hinrich appears to have powers beyond those of mortal men. "He is Superman. Yeah, he's Superman. That's a perfect name for him," Kansas forward Drew Gooden said after Hinrich, KU's injured guard, put on a magical display, scoring 15 points and collecting eight assists in the Jayhawks' 86-63 second-round NCAA Midwest Regional victory over Stanford on Saturday night at Edward Jones Dome. "Kirk could barely walk two days ago. For him to do what he did tonight … that is impressive," Gooden added. Full Story.

Atlanta — Yes, Kansas University did go down … "But at least we went out swinging," KU junior forward Drew Gooden said after the Jayhawks' crazy 97-88 loss to Maryland in a Final Four semifinal at the Georgia Dome. "Coach told us to keep fighting all the way and that's what we did." The Jayhawks — who raced to a 13-2 lead to begin the game, only to see Maryland lead, 44-37, at halftime and extend the margin to an astounding 83-63 with 6:11 left — actually had a chance at the end, cutting the gap to four at 92-88 with :19.8 left.
