* Wilt Chamberlain (1957-1958). (Mayer, Woodling, Bedore all picked as the center)

"The guy you start with is Wilt Chamberlain," Woodling said.

During his two years at KU, Chamberlain dominated college basketball, averaging at 29.9 per game and 18.9 rebounds. In his varsity debut game at KU, he turned in the greatest individual doubleton in Jayhawk history, scoring 52 points and collecting 31 boards. Those 52 points still stand as the all-time record.

He left Kansas after the 1958 season to join the Harlem Globetrotters. In 1959, he joined the NBA's Philadelphia Warriors. He became the first player to ever win the Rookie of the Year and Most Valuable Player awards in the same season. Chamberlain had his famous 100-point game during the 1962 season, and averaged more than 50 points and 25 rebounds for a whole season.

Mayer heaped praise on Chamberlain.

"Nobody is ever going to score 100 points in a game, again, I'll betcha. Nobody is ever gonna average over 50 points and over 25 rebounds," Mayer said.

Chamberlain played 14 seasons in the NBA with the Warriors, the Philadelphia 76ers and the Los Angeles Lakers. He also won four MVP awards and led the league in scoring seven consecutive seasons.

Chamberlain, who also appeared in a few movies, including "Conan the Barbarian" with Arnold Schwartzenegger, returned to KU on Jan. 17, 1998, to see his jersey retired in the fieldhouse rafters. He died Oct.12, 1999.
