* Ray Evans, (1942-1943, 1946-1947) (Mayer, bench). Evans, 6-1 1/2 195-pound guard is one of the greatest sports figures in Kansas history, having been named an All-American in both basketball and football (he was KU's first football All-American). Evans played basketball under Coach Phog Allen and was a four-time All-Big Six selection. He led the Jayhawks to an NCAA tourney appearance in 1942 and to a 22-6 season in 1943. After leaving to join the Army Air Corps, he returned in 1946 to lead the Jayhawks to a 19-6 season, a Big 6 crown and an NCAA Tournament appearance. Evans was voted into the Kansas All Sports Hall of Fame in 1971 and his jersey was retired in 1997 in Allen Fieldhouse.
