* Nolen Ellison, (1960-1963) (Mayer, bench). Nolen Ellison was a 6-1, 185-pound guard who scored 1,045 points and averaged 13.9 points per game in three seasons at KU. He shot .412 from the field and .749 from the charity stripe.
Ellison, who was All-Big Eight in 1961, scored 453 points in 1962 and his scoring average that year was the fourth-highest in the Big Eight.
Ellison put on what Mayer said was one of the greatest single performances he had ever seen, during a 1962 KU-K-State tournament game. There were four overtimes and Ellison played all 60 minutes.
"He made 32 points. He hit every shot he had to and made every free throw he had to. He could play with anybody," Mayer said.
How did he follow up his 60-minute, 32-point performance? He got married the next day.
Mayer said Ellison, a Wyandotte High grad, had a big Kansas City following and really gave them a treat that night, as well as on many other nights.
