* Clyde Lovellette (1950-1952). (Mayer and Bedore picked him as a forward; Woodling would bring him in from the bench to spell Chamberlain). At the top of his game in 1952, the 6-9, 230-pound Lovellette could score and rebound with the best - and led KU to its first NCAA championship, an 80-63 win over St. John's. During that season, Lovellette average 28.4 points per game, helping KU to a 28-3 season and seven Olympic berths.
Lovellette was the 1952 NCAA Tournament MVP. He was consensus first team All-American 1951 and 1952, led the 1952 Jayhawk-hubbed U.S. Olympic basketball team to a gold medal at Helsinki, Finland. He played for one year of AAU basketball, then played professionally over 12 seasons with St. Louis, Cincinnati, Minneapolis and Boston. He was the only player in history to win the NCAA title and lead the nation in scoring during the same season. He is KU's third all-time leading scorer, with 1,979 points (24.7 points per game). He is KU's eighth all-time rebounder, with 813 boards. He is a member of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Mass.
