* B.H. Born (1952-1954) (Mayer, bench). During his first varsity season at Kansas, Born played backup to Clyde Lovellette and got little attention - though he took a lot of tough practice schooling from Clyde. But after Lovellette left, Born established himself as one of the nation's best centers. In 1953, he averaged 18.9 points and 11.2 rebounds per game and was named an All-American and first team All-Big Seven. He led Kansas to its second consecutive NCAA title game, which the Jayhawks lost to Indiana, 69-68. He was picked as the most outstanding player in the tournament, the first member of a non-title team ever so honored.
Sadly, blocked shots were not officially tabulated in 1953 or Born would have registered the first official triple-double in KU history. Along with his double figures in scoring and rebounding, Born had 13 blocked shots while going against Indiana All-American Don Schlundt. In his senior season, Born had 19 points per game, including shooting .663 from the free throw line.
He was named to the All-Big Seven team and went on to play in the 1954 World Championships.
In the third round of the 1954 NBA draft, Born was picked by the Fort Wayne Pistons, but never played for them. He went to work, instead, for Caterpillar Tractor Co., in Peoria, Ill. His jersey was retired at KU on Feb. 15, 1992, in a ceremony honoring the 1952 championship team.
